When a newborn baby is born, we all celebrate.
It’s lovely news. We gather to see the precious newborn, and we might even buy them a present. We make quite a big deal about a child’s arrival into this world, and rightly so, for each one is a precious gift from God. Parents are privileged to take care of the children entrusted to them, and they are responsible for training and nurturing God’s very own sons and daughters for a season. If parents do a good job, children mature into adults who are totally dependent on God, not their
parents, others or anything else. Between the ages of 0 and say 21, children receive a lot of input from family members, the educational system and the community at large to enable them to become the individuals God desires for His plans and purposes.
Now, let’s think about a spiritual baby – someone who had just been born again at church, at a house group or out on the streets. This babe in Christ needs just as much input as a physical, natural baby. He or she needs to be fed, watered, changed, nurtured, trained etc. A natural newborn baby should by no means be left to its own devices – it just wouldn’t survive, and that would be a tragic loss. Well, for the very same reason, neither should a spiritual baby, a newborn Christian, be neglected. This is where one-to-one discipleship is relevant and essential. Someone who helps a babe in Christ is a little bit like a spiritual mother or father who helps the ‘baby’ gain understanding and revelation regarding their new identity until they gain some independence and eventually become a mature Christian who is dependent on God. Whether it’s a natural or a spiritual baby, helping the baby to grow up is a big commitment and is fuelled by love. It takes time and energy and brings tears of joy and tears of sorrow. It’s fulfilling and sometimes heartbreaking. Who knows what the outcome of all our efforts will be? However, the outcome of doing it wholeheartedly for God will be the pleasure of hearing Him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” (see Matthew 25:23).
